Storyline and cast
The Secret Daughter is a new Australian drama series written by Justin Monjo, Greg Haddrick, Louise Bowes and Keith Thompson and produced by Screentime. The show, which premiered on October 3, 2016 on Seven with a six-part freshman chapter, is executive produced by Haddrick, Bob Campbell, Rory Callaghan and Julie McGauran.
Australian Idol alumni singer Jessica Mauboy stars as lead character Billie Carter, a part-time country pub singer brought into a big city after the death of a rich magnate, who left his family all of his money. The humble country girl is drawn into a completely new life that she has never even imagined, with a family and a father included. The highly emotional drama intensifies as other members of the family resent the fact that the newcomer may be entitled to a slice of the sizable inheritance that everyone is so keen on.
Ratings and renewal potential
The series premiere opened with just under 900,000 viewers tuning in, a very strong result for Australian television. Further episodes have not dipped below 831,000 viewers, efficiently keeping the fans on edge and their curiosity piqued. The 7.3/10 IMDb rating denotes positive viewer reception, and, indeed, the reviews for the drama are strong, noting the raw emotional performances, the poignant social commentary and heart-warming moments that will hopefully lead to a positive resolution by the end. Stay tuned and we`ll inform you when an announcement is made regarding the future of The Secret Daughter series.
Series 1 recap
On November 7, 2016 Seven Network has wrapped up the broadcast of its new Australian drama The Secret Daughter. The six-episode freshman series did very well in the ratings department, attracting 0.795 million viewers for the series finale (up to 0.957 million in total viewers), and earned a 7.5/10 IMDb rating. The freshman series ended with mixed feelings when Billie stepped in for the headliner of a performance at the relaunch of Jack`s Bar, while she was still dealing with the fact that she is not a member of the Norton family. In fact, we`d like to note that she very well may be, as it turned out that she was never actually tested, but has not tested negatively. Perhaps the second series will deal with this plot hole in a constructive manner, since – yes – there will indeed be a second series in 2017, as Seven Network has recently announced.
