Series information and plot
One of the two HBO original comedies launched this season, Insecure was created by Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore based on Rae`s web series. It is executive produced by Rae, Prentice Penny, Michael Rotenberg, Melina Matsoukas, Dave Becky and Jonathan Berry and hails from Penny for Your Thoughts Entertainment and 3 Arts Entertainment. The freshman season kicked off on October 9, 2016.
The eight-episode first season centers on charity worker Issa Dee (Rae) and successful lawyer Molly Carter (Yvonne Orji), two twenty-something African American friends whose already tumultuous lives are complicated by conflicts both outside and within black culture. They are in different relationship situations – Issa is on the verge of breaking up with her live-in boyfriend, and Molly is unsuccessfully searching for a partner, and both have their hands full with troubles of various kinds.
Excellent reception and renewal potential
The raunchy, frank, insightful and hilarious exploration of contemporary life has received critical acclaim, starting wth the compelling pilot, which is a rare thing these days. Insecure earned a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, 84% on Metacritic, and 6.9/10 on IMDb. At first sight nothing seems exceptionally new here except the crisply written and refreshingly voiced emotional observations of a group that`s largely underrepresented on television. The series does focus on the black female experience, yet it does that in a way that brings out the universally relatable issues. Insecure is really an excellent series with great potential, and we believe that a second season renewal announcement is certainly in the cards.
Season 1 recap
The eight-episode freshman season of HBO`s breakthrough comedy series Insecure wrapped up on November 27, 2016. The season went out with a bang, when the season high of 0.565 million viewers tuned in to see what Issa and Molly are up to. The emotional finale with a no less emotional title “Broken as F**k” portrays Issa desperate to get Lawrence back after he leaves her on the heels of finding out that she has cheated on him, and most of the episode is constructed around her trying to do something about it, ending on a sad note, when Issa finally collapses into Molly`s lap, crying. The painfully realistic and hilarious show has already been renewed for a second season on the wave of the great critical acclaim that it`s garnered since the very first episode.
