New period drama – production info and plot
Frontier is the first ever original series commissioned by the Canadian Discovery Channel, with collaboration from Netflix. It is a historical drama created by Brad Peyton, Rob Blackie and Peter Blackie, executive produced by Peyton, Jeff Fierson, Alex Patrick and John Vatcher at Take the Shot Productions and Factory Backwards. The first season debuted on Discovery on November 6, 2016, and will be available on Netflix outside of Canada on January 20, 2017.
The drama series seeks to chronicle fur trade in North America in the 1770s. Hudson`s Bay Company was a monopolist in Canada at the time, and Declan Harp (Game of Thrones` Jason Momoa), an outlaw with Irish and native roots, is set on breaking the status quo and competing with the powerful company. The action period drama portrays the rather bloody struggle for power and wealth in the disputed territories that now constitute Canada.
Reviews and potential renewal
The series is an entertaining, fast-paced take on the events in the cutthroat world portrayed, rather than closely focusing on being historically accurate, Prior to the series premiere Frontier received a commission for a second season, and while it is not yet clear whether the decision has proven itself to be the right one, the show did earn a solid 7.2/10 IMDb rating. Reviews are mostly positive, with most of the criticism stemming from the lack of character development and lack of authenticity. Perhaps Frontier is trying too hard to be tough and riveting, but it was not meant to be the new Game of Thrones despite what some of the viewers expected, and with proper expectations, the show succeeds at entertaining.
