Storyline and production info
A new Brazilian sci-fi thriller series, 3% is available for streaming on Netflix worldwide since November 25, 2016. It is created by Pedro Aguilera, executive produced by Cesar Charlone and Tiago Mello and produced by Boutique Filmes. Netflix`s first collaboration with Brazilian filmmakers, and its second Latin American original after Club de Cuervos, the freshman season of the drama series is comprised of eight episodes.
3% is set is in a dystopian future where the world is divided sharply into two contrasting parts. Most of the world is a poverty-stricken, dismal, state-governed place where all people twenty and over have to participate in a series of challenges, which ultimately lead to 3% of contestants winning the right to join a privileged group of individuals living in a dream land known as The Offshore. The island 4000 miles from the coast of Brazil is practically a mythical paradise.
Reception and chances of renewal
As the economic divide cuts deeper and deeper into contemporary society around the world, separating the devastatingly poor from the affluent elites, series like Hunger Games and The Maze Runner become more and more relevant. 3% builds on their success and poignancy, and adds something to that universe. Its lack of a huge production budget is absolutely compensated by the brilliant directing and camera work, and IMDb reviewers grant it a solid 8/10 score. The second season of 3% has not been commissioned yet, but considering the popularity that the show is gaining, we would assume that the probability of a renewal is high.
