Premise and production info
People Magazine Investigates is a new true crime documentary launched by Investigation Discovery in collaboration with People. It is executive produced by Chad Itskowitz, Donnie Echar and Brandon Hill and hails from Radley Studios. The freshman season contains ten sixty-minute episodes and has premiered on November 7, 2016.
The documentary series delves into ten grim true-crime stories, one per episode. These are high-profile cases that became common knowledge, transcending the news headlines, and that were never resolved in the course of the original investigations. The first episode follows the disappearance of Shannan Gilbert on Long Island, NY in 2010, the subsequent discovery of ten more bodies and serial killer suspicions. The Grim Sleeper case, a savage murder in Alaska, the mysterious case of JonBenet Ramsey, and other criminal stories follow later on in the season.
Ratings and prospects for the future
The new program aims to explore the details and circumstances previously unavailable for examination. This is achieved through interviews with experts and people related to the cases, gripping first-hand accounts and dramatic recreations. People Magazine Investigates premiered strongly, with 0.96 million viewers and a reasonable 0.26 demo rating. Its IMDb score is also a respectable 7.7/10, and it seems that the program is a solid example of the true crime genre, and in light of its popularity and the unfortunate fact that unsolved criminal cases are numerous, we may very well be in for another season of the show in the future.
