Series premise and info
True-crime stories are consistently popular with the television audience, and this season is ripe with criminal investigation docuseries. One among these is The Killing Season, which premiered on A&E Network on November 12, 2016. It is executive produced and hosted by Rachel Mills and Joshua Zeman. The freshman season contains eight episodes.
The Killing Season investigates one of the most mysterious unsolved contemporary serial killer cases, that of the Long Island serial killer. Zeman and Mills attempt to discover huge new bodies of information and new clues and features interviews conducted on an extensive road trip through the country. The bodies of ten sex workers discovered on Gilgo Beach in Long Island, NY may not be the end of the story, and may in fact turn out to be the work of a much more prolific murderer, with similar unresolved cases uncovered in Atlantic City, Daytona Beach, and beyond. It may as well be coincidental, and it`s not clear whether any conclusive evidence will be available to support either version.
Viewership dynamics and renewal prospects
The program premiered to an unremarkable 0.13 demo rating and 0.43 million viewers, and improved in the following week, drawing 0.53 million viewers and earning a 0.17 demo rating. IMDb viewers find the series compelling enough to agree on an 8.1/10 rating, yet there is criticism of the series` structure being cluttered with non-consequential tangents and superimposed drama. While it is difficult to imagine another season of the program dwelling on the same case, even if it remains unresolved by the end of the current installment, an anthology format seems entirely possible, considering the unfortunately large pool of unresolved murder cases to draw from.
