Series background and format
Explorer is a National Geographic documentary series airing on NG since 2004, although it was initially launched in 1985. It has an extensive background on other channels, including Nickelodeon, TBS, CNBC and MSNBC, in its 24 years on the screen. The longest-running documentary program on cable was created and developed by Joe Seamans, and is currently produced by National Geographic Society and executive produced by Robert Zakin. The current ninth season on NG premiered on November 14, 2016.
Explorer follows the premise of National Geographic Specials, but currently utilizes a news-style journal format. It is basically a series of stand-alone documentary segments that take the viewers around the world to its most interesting corners. The current season opened with host Richard Bacon interviewing environmental activist Erin Brockovitch and comic Larry Willmore, and the second episode portrays a librarian in Timbuktu single-handedly rescuing ancient manuscripts from destruction by terrorists.
Ratings and probable renewal
The series` current season premiered weakly with 0.34 million viewers and a 0.08 rating. Explorer has a well-deserved 8.2/10 IMDb rating, and is a favorite with those who love the mysteries that the world holds in all of its different domains. The show has been honored with over 400 awards over the course of its run, including 52 Emmys, and has several generations of fans who grew up with it. Another season is almost surely in the cards for National Geographic`s Explorer, and we will inform you as soon as the network announces its plans.
