Plot and production info
Close to the Enemy is a new period drama series airing on BBC Two in the United Kingdom and on Starz in the United States. It is written and directed by Stephen Poliakoff, executive produced by Hilary Bevan Jones, Helen Flint and Colin Callender and produced by Little Island Productions, All3Media International and Endor Productions. The first series was launched on November 10, 2016.
Set in the late 1940s, the series focuses on British intelligence officer Captain Callum Ferguson (Jim Sturgess) whose duty it is to ensure that the kidnapped German scientist Dieter Koehler (August Diehl) assists the British military in the design and development of jet aircraft.
Decent viewership and dire reviews
The series premiered with strong viewership of 2.74 million, and declined somewhat to 2.12 million in the next week. It has a below average 5.3/10 IMDb rating and rather dismal reviews from critics and viewers alike. There is practically unanimous criticism of most of the show`s aspects, including an unconvincing plot, terrible acting and ridiculous dialogues. In fact, it is referred to as a waste of a perfectly good opportunity to make a solid historical drama rooted in real events. Does the BBC perceive it in the same pessimistic manner? All the critics ripping the show apart could not have gone unnoticed, but there hasn`t been either a renewal or a cancelation announcement just yet. In spite of the unanimous disapproval there is a very real chance of another series being commissioned, so please stay tuned for further announcements.
