Basic info and storyline
River Monsters is a wildlife documentary series that features the most fearsome freshwater killers around the world. Hosted by biologist and extreme adventurer Jeremy Wade, the show presents clues, eyewitness accounts and reenacted stories of people who have come into contact with vicious predators dwelling in deep waters. Produced for Animal Planet by Icon Films of Bristol in the U.K., the series debuted on April 5, 2009. River Monsters season 8 premiered on Animal Planet in the U.S. and on ITV in the U.K. on April 7, 2016.
Each episode of River Monsters follows Jeremy Wade as he tries to catch the biggest specimens to understand the truth behind the horrific human attacks. Once captured, rather than killing the animals, he releases them back into the wild as a way to save the creatures from extinction. River Monsters has become of the most watched programs on Animal Planet, and profiles predators like piranhas, goonch catfish, alligators, wels catfish, arapaima, and freshwater shark species, among others. In addition to the familiar culprits, River Monsters season 8 also features saltwater predators found in Mexico, Australia and Bermuda. The eight season will also explore the legendary and mythical beasts who inhabit various water bodies.

Having achieved worldwide success, River Monsters consistently delivers an average audience of over 1.3 million. Season six was the network’s biggest premiere to date, drawing in 1.7 million viewers. The series has maintained an above average rating 8.2 out of 10 on IMDb, and 9.2 out of 10 on TV.com. The immense popularity of the show makes it almost immune to cancelation, so we are very likely to see a ninth season of River Monsters some time in the future.
