Series information and plot

Death in Paradise is a hit British-French criminal comedy / drama television series broadcast on BBC One in the UK since October 25, 2011. The series is created by Robert Thorogood, executive produced by Tony Jordan, Klaus Zimmerman and Belinda Campbell, and produced by Red Planet Productions, Atlantique Production in collaboration with Kudos for BBC and France Télévisions. The current fifth season debuted on January 7, 2016.

The criminal comedy is set on the fictional island of Saint Marie in the Caribbean. It follows a very formulaic structure, which has been both criticized for being restrictive, and praised for creating a cozy familiar feeling. For the first two series DI Richard Poole`s (Ben Miller) investigations of murders committed on the island are at the center of the plot. Following his death in the beginning of series three, Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall), an awkward detective from London, arrives to first investigate his predecessor`s murder, and then to stay on the island as his successor.

Critical reception, ratings and renewal prospects

Not only has Death in Paradise enjoyed excellent ratings throughout the four completed series, it has in fact gained more viewers with every consecutive series. The first season averaged about 5 million viewers, around 7 million were tuning in for the second, and about 8 million – for the third and fourth series. The critical response has been mixed, with praise for the laid-back atmosphere, and criticism for the too-methodical approach to investigation and predictable plots. The secret to the solid, yet uninventive series` otherwise mysterious success might be the location – a sunny exotic place that very much resembles a tourist brochure – and isn`t it a pleasure it is to be carried away to an imaginary holiday on a dreary January evening? As long as there are no drastic climate changes, the viewers might keep getting at least part of their sun fix from Death in Paradise.
