Series information and plot
Death in Paradise is a hit British-French criminal comedy / drama television series broadcast on BBC One in the UK since October 25, 2011. The series is created by Robert Thorogood, executive produced by Tony Jordan, Klaus Zimmerman and Belinda Campbell, and produced by Red Planet Productions, Atlantique Production in collaboration with Kudos for BBC and France Télévisions. The current fifth season debuted on January 7, 2016.
The criminal comedy is set on the fictional island of Saint Marie in the Caribbean. It follows a very formulaic structure, which has been both criticized for being restrictive, and praised for creating a cozy familiar feeling. For the first two series DI Richard Poole`s (Ben Miller) investigations of murders committed on the island are at the center of the plot. Following his death in the beginning of series three, Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall), an awkward detective from London, arrives to first investigate his predecessor`s murder, and then to stay on the island as his successor.
Critical reception, ratings and renewal prospects
Not only has Death in Paradise enjoyed excellent ratings throughout the four completed series, it has in fact gained more viewers with every consecutive series. The first season averaged about 5 million viewers, around 7 million were tuning in for the second, and about 8 million – for the third and fourth series. The critical response has been mixed, with praise for the laid-back atmosphere, and criticism for the too-methodical approach to investigation and predictable plots. The secret to the solid, yet uninventive series` otherwise mysterious success might be the location – a sunny exotic place that very much resembles a tourist brochure – and isn`t it a pleasure it is to be carried away to an imaginary holiday on a dreary January evening? As long as there are no drastic climate changes, the viewers might keep getting at least part of their sun fix from Death in Paradise.
Updated February 26, 2016: Hooray! Kris Marshall and his crew will keep on investigating crimes in St. Marie`s beautiful tropical setting for another eight episodes. As Death in Paradise is wrapping up its fifth series, it has gotten a commission for a sixth run. Executive producer Tim Key mentioned that they`ve “got ambitious plans for series six, with a whole host of intriguing surprises”. We can`t wait!
UPDATED June 27, 2016: The greatly anticipated sixth series of BBC One hit sun-soaked drama Death in Paradise is scheduled to air its eight brand new episodes some time in 2017. That`s not particularly surprising news, since we new of the renewal and suspected the time frame, but BBC One has also revealed some exciting news regarding the acting talent involved in the upcoming chapter. Sally Bretton (as Martha Lloyd) is set to return as a series regular, having already made a guest appearance in the season five finale. There will be a host of acting talent making guest appearances on the show, including Ramon Tikram (Happy Valley), Douglas Hodge (The Night Manager), Kerry Fox (Glue), and many others. Another exciting development in the upcoming chapter is that for the first time in the series` history some of it (actually, a whole two-episode special) will be filmed in London.
