Production info and plot

Benidorm is an acclaimed British sitcom television series broadcast on ITV since February 1, 2007. It is currently in its eighth series, which aired on January 11, 2016. It is created by Derren Litten, written by Derren Litten, Steve Pemberton and Nel Fitzmaurice, produced by Tiger Aspect Productions and executive produced by Sophie Clarke-Jervoise, Ben Cavey and Derren Litten. The first two seasons` format was a half-hour one, and in the subsequent seasons it was changed to one-hour.

Benidorm follows the Garvey family and other habitual guests of the fictional Solana Resort in very real Benidorm, Spain, a town popular with British tourists on their yearly holiday. The eighth series will not see the crazy Garvey family return, instead, another family, the Dawsons, will take the central spot. The series is far from being politically correct, but the caricature genre can`t be – it thrives on stereotypes and derives most of its humor from it, so it`s not done without an underlying reason.

Awards, current season issues and renewal prospects

The series has garnered several prestigious awards – two National Television Awards, two TV Choice Awards and a BAFTA nomination, which is an honor in itself. Benidorm`s current season premiered to 4.58 million viewers, which, although a decent number in itself, represents a 1 million loss when compared to the last season`s launch. There is a serious issue of whether the new family will be able to become a worthy replacement for the grotesque-ish and much-loved Garveys from the audience`s point of view. In fact, it might become a key issue, as the viewership may sink if the Dawsons don`t find their way to the viewers` hearts. However, the framework of the comedy series is strong enough to allow some leeway for mistakes. Anyway, it is still unclear whether the viewers will take to the new cast, so a decision on a renewal or a cancelation of this popular series might go either way.
