ABC officially canceled Castle Season 9

This article has the most up-to-date info on the status of Castle Season 9 as we continuously monitor the news to keep you in the know. Unfortunately, ABC has officially canceled the series. There will be no Season 9.

Basic info and storyline

Castle is an America comedy-drama television series that follows the life of a famous mystery novelist as he cooperates with the New York City police department in solving crimes. Created by Andrew Marlowe, the show premiered in March of 2009 and has been a success for the past eight seasons. Season 8 of the show premiered on ABC on September 21, 2015.

The first time viewers met Richard Castle he was deep in a writer’s block and desperate for any kind of ideas to come from whichever source. Fate dealt him a hand when a series of copycat murders occurred with each staged to imitate those from one of Castle’s books. The NYPD begins to question him in connection with the crimes, which leads Castle out of his writer’s block and towards a new and fruitful relationship with the police department, specifically with Detective Kate Beckett.

In Season 8, New York’s famous detective couple is going through much turmoil with Kate finding the need to fight the ghosts of her past. Will Castle and Kate divorce or will their breakup make them even stronger as a couple in the end? More importantly, will Castle return for Season 9?

Though there were some obstacles signing Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic for Season 8, we believe that the series will remain one of ABC’s reliable drama performers and will be renewed next year no matter the cost. If so, Castle Season 9 will likely return for a fall lineup next year.

UPDATED December 22, 2015: As you know, most primetime television series go on Christmas break this time of year. Season 8 of Castle has already aired eight episodes, which concluded on ABC on November 23, 2015, and it will continue with all new episodes only on February 14, 2016. The network is yet to renew or cancel the series, but considering the consistently high ratings, we think it will be an easy decision.

UPDATED May 14, 2016: This news will come as a shock and a disappointment to many fans, but the ABC network has just officially announced that their long-running hit police procedural drama Castle is getting canceled after eight seasons. The sad news comes just a few days before the current installment is scheduled to wrap up on May 16th. Little did we know just a short time ago that it would actually be the series finale. The decision not to move forward with a ninth season was driven by Stana Katic’s leaving the show and also by declining, although still rather solid ratings. In the current installment, the police drama is averaging 6.2 million fans per episode. There is always a chance that ABC revives the series or that it gets picked up by another network, so stay tuned for any news.
