Series background, plot and cast
The acclaimed Scandinavian criminal drama The Bridge is broadcast in Australia (among approximately 100 other countries) on SBS since 2012. The series is a collaboration (in both creative and financial aspect) among Sveriges Television, Danmarks Radio and German ZDF. It is created and written by Hans Rosenfeldt and produced by Nimbus Film and Filmlance International. The third series, which consists of 10 one-hour episodes, premiered on January 14, 2016.
Swedish detective Saga Norén (Sofia Helin) and her Danish counterpart Martin Rohde (Kim Bodnia) were untangling strange and complicated cases – one per season – for two chapters, and the third season saw Rohde replaced with another Danish officer Henrik Sabroe (Thure Lindhardt) after Sara reported Rohde for poisoning his son`s murderer, and he was subsequently incarcerated.
Viewership and renewal potential
The ratings of The Bridge`s third season aren`t amazing, but it`s curious to see the unusual viewership dynamics for the month of February – a gradual increase from 114,000 to 140,000 viewers. Whether or not there will be a renewal is not quite clear, as that decision will be made on the basis of the series` performance in a number of countries, not just Australia. It did rather well in Denmark, Sweden and the UK in its fall broadcasts before coming to SBS. Sofia Helin, who portrays Asperger detective Saga Norén, has mentioned that she is not sure that there should be a fourth season, since this season she “really dug so deep in her” (Saga), so that she doesn`t know “what`s more left in her”. Time will tell, meanwhile enjoy the rest of the ongoing series, and we will inform you of whether or not the series is renewed for a fourth season as soo as this information is released.
UPDATED May 6, 2016: Hans Rosenfeldt, the creator of The Bridge has unofficially announced the renewal of the mega-hit Scandinavian criminal drama The Bridge for a fourth series, which will almost certainly be its last. In another piece of very welcome news, it is very likely that Kim Bodnia will return as the key player in the upcoming series. His departure after the completion of series 2 occurred on grounds of creative disagreements with the rest of the production team, but his return will definitely be welcome by the fans. In his announcement Rosenfeldt hinted that the fourth series` storyline will pick up at a very different place from where the previous chapter has left off, and should be a great surprise for the audience. The Bridge has yet to be officially commissioned, but we would be surprised if an official renewal was not in place.
