Series information and concept
Netflix has released several promising shows on March 11, 2016, among them is Netflix Presents: The Characters. It is a sketch comedy TV series that is comprised of eight unrelated half-hour episodes, each of which features one young stand-up comedian on the rise. The comics are Lauren Lapkus, Kate Berlant, Dr. Brown, Paul W. Downs, John Early, Tim Robbins, Natasha Rothwell and Henry Zebrowski.
The comedians were not limited by the producers in their choice of subject matter, style or artistic license, they could materialize their wildest ideas, and the episodes did turn out very different in every aspect imaginable. The situations portrayed range from reality dating competitions, variety shows and wedding rehearsal dinners all the way through to a homeless man on the subway.
Critical reception and renewal potential
The series is a step in a direction different than usual, since the manner in which Netflix series are released makes them perfect for binge watching, while The Characters require a break between the episodes to digest and savor the taste of each. It`s an enjoyable show, which might not be perfect, but it makes the audience recall that television doesn`t always have to be a perfectly chiseled manicured work that aims for nothing but high ratings, but can be a thoughtful and fun work-in-progress. An excellent new opportunity for promising comedians to showcase their talents, The Characters may very well be picked up for another season, as it`s enjoying a very warm critical and viewer reception at this point for the fresh format and, well, that which was the original point – hilarious comedy.
