Production info, plot and cast

A criminal drama series set in the 1950s British countryside, Grantchester has been broadcast on ITV since 2014. The second series is now on the air, having premiered on March 2, 2016. The show is based on The Grantchester Mysteries by James Runcia and written by Daisy Coulam. It is a co-production between Lovely Day and Masterpiece, with Diederick Santer and Rebecca Eaton executive producing.

A clergyman detective is not a rare figure in criminal fiction, and Grantchester`s Sidney Chambers (James Norton) joins the list. His counterpart in investigating local crimes is Detective Inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green). Chambers is intuitive, and Keating more methodical, so their abilities complement each other perfectly as they work together to untangle the local murder mysteries.

Viewer reception and possible renewal

The series has been commended for its worthwhile attempt to recreate the period-set classic murder stories without the gore and obvious on-screen violence or the complex detective characters on the brink of madness, who are ever so popular in today`s television. James Norton`s performance is lauded, as is the overall steady pace and pleasant setting. Review aggregator websites have been kind to Grantchester, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a 100% certified fresh rating, and IMDb scores averaging 8/10. The second series premiere of Grantchester attracted 5.51 million viewers, and the second episode was seen by 5.04 million in L+7. The series delivers excellent ratings, is easy to watch and love – a perfect recipe for renewal, isn`t it? Stay tuned for a network announcement, and enjoy the rest of the current series.

Series 2 recap

A 6-part sophomore chapter of the British mystery drama TV series Grantchester bowed out on the ITV network in the UK on April 6, 2016 and wrapped up across the ocean on the American PBS network on May 1, 2016. The series has been praised on both sides of the Atlantic, and although it is yet to garner any critical accolades, the program boasts an impressive 8/10 average score on IMDb. It continues raking in impressive ratings in its native Great Britain, and in its second installment the series has managed to increase the average viewership per episode: it opened with 7.7 million viewers and averaged more than 6.5 million fans per episode. The series 2 finale felt more the beginning than the end and finished with a major cliffhanger, as expected. It was all done with a sole purpose to wet the audience’s appetite while they are waiting for new episodes to be back on the air in 2017.
