Show concept

Ellen Page, an actress who recently came out of the closet and became a fierce advocate of LGBT rights, and her best friend Ian Daniel go around the globe exploring LGBTQ cultures on Viceland`s brand new docuseries Gaycation. The series, executive produced by Page herself, premiered on March 2, 2016 and consists of 4 episodes. Each episode was devoted entirely to the exploration of a single country. The pair travels to Brazil, Japan, Jamaica and around the US.

The journey is a personal one for the duo, as they explore LGBTQ identities around the world, the widely varying treatment that sexual minorities receive from society and the striving for equality, and, in some cases – for survival. The circumstances are, naturally, very different in the four locales portrayed in Gaycation, with awkwardness being the least upsetting of the encountered situations. In Rio, for example, Page and Daniel encounter and interview a masked man who openly admits to having killed gay people for being gay.

Youtube views and renewal potential

The ratings for Viceland shows are currently measured by Nielsen, but for the first six months after the network`s launch the numbers will not be released publicly, However, Viceland has released early episodes of six of its series on several online platforms, such as Facebook, vice.com and Youtube. The second episode of Gaycation has drawn 166,000 views on Youtube – a result not as impressive as the 6.3 million views of Weediquette. But, who knows, perhaps the social importance of the topics raised and the subjects portrayed will outweigh the somewhat low ratings.
