Production info and series concept
The Internet Ruined My Life is a new unscripted series that premiered on SyFy on March 9, 2016. The series hails from Left/Right Productions and Atomic Entertainment, with Banks Tarver, Ken Druckerman, Jerry Kolber and Adam Davis serving as executive producers. The series contains six 30-minute episodes.
The show explores issues relevant to social media and its dangers. Each episode portrays two compelling first-person accounts of how social media activity unexpectedly backfired in the most perilous ways. Tweets, hashtags, sexts, meme, profile pictures, and other things that have gone awry to the point of posing a serious life threat or driving people to attempted suicide. The stories are told through interviews and recreations of the real-life experiences.
Ratings, mixed reviews and chances of renewal
The Internet Ruined My Life holds a measly 2.9 IMDb score, and has not received many positive reviews. The series premiered to 469,000 viewers and a 0.2 demo rating, and dropped to 418,000 for the second episode. Although the importance of acknowledging the perils of online harassment can not be underestimated, there are serious issues with the manner of storytelling that make the audience question the credibility of the information provided. Even though the pool of stories involving the dangers of the Internet is practically inexhaustible, the way in which The Internet Ruined My Life approaches the subject matter seems far from perfection.
