Series info and plot
The A Word is a BBC drama TV series that debuted on March 21, 2016. The series is created by Keren Margalit and based on her book Yellow Peppers. Peter Bowker developed and wrote the series, which is executive produced by Margalit, Bowker, Patrick Spence, Lucy Ritcher at BBC, and Sarah Kohnsson and Avi Nir at Keshet and produced by Keshet UK and Filthy Fathoms.
Five year-old Joe (Max Vento), at the center of the drama series` plot, has obvious communication problems, and is eventually diagnosed with autism. His parents Alison (Morven Christie) and Paul (Lee Ingleby) seem oblivious to the problem, but later begin to acknowledge their son`s disorder. Other family members – Joe`s 16 year-old sister Rebecca (Molly Wright), Alison`s brother Eddie (Greg McHugh), Alison`s father Maurice (Cristopher Eccleston) – are also involved and their struggles to cope with their own dysfunctional situations as well as Joe`s condition is portrayed.
Positive reception and potential renewal
The series premiered to 5.91 million viewers (consolidated average) and has an 8/10 rating on IMDb. The critical reviews and audience reception were overall very positive, mentioning the impressive acting as well as the way in which it deals with the autistic condition. The series` writer Peter Bowker has spent 14 years working with children with learning disabilities, so he knows exactly how to make the script that`s true to life in regard to the central character.
