About the show
A brand-new addition to the extensive slate of trendy off-the-grid reality shows, The Boonies premiered on National Geographic on January 19, 2016. It is narrated by Michael Madsen, executive produced by Brian Skope, Brad Bishop, Tom Forman, Jon Beyer, Jonathan Bogner, Oliver Bogner and Robert Palumbo, and produced by National Geographic Channel, Wildwoods Inc, ISPY Music, Atlas Digital, The Ether and Shutterstock.
The series follows off-the-grid individuals and families that go to extreme lengths in order to avoid living within the confines of the society`s rules. These are truly unique individuals for whom even homesteading is too close to the norm. They search for complete independence in places no one would even think to look – a cave, a remote island, top of the mountain, even a tree. Not many people are willing to pay this high a price for their idea of a freedom, but those featured in The Boonies are.
Viewership and ratings
One of the individuals portrayed is Bear Claw, a North Idaho man living as if it were the 1800s, additionally there`s a couple living in a treehouse, but also a man living on an inhabited Beaver Island in the middle of Lake Michigan with a motorboat at his disposal. This definitely raises some issues with the credibility of the overdramatic pitch of the narrative. The Boonies premiered to 762,000 viewers with a 0.16 rating in the 18-49 demo rating. The show has a 7.5/10 IMDb score and seems to be doing well with a certain segment of the audience. The future of the show has not been decided yet, so please stay tuned for further announcements.
