Production information and plot

An important part of large-scale celebrations of the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare`s death, Upstart Crow is a British historical sitcom set in 1592 and onwards. It is written by Ben Elton, directed by Matt Lipsey and executive produced by Mylanwy Moore. The series has premiered on May 9, 2016 with the Star-Crossed Lovers episode, related to Romeo and Juliet. The first series of Upstart Crow comprises six episodes.

David Mitchell stars as Shakespeare, his wife Anne Hathaway is portrayed by Liza Tarbuck, and Mark Heap is Robert Greene, Shakespeare`s rival and the author of the critical quote which gave the name to the series, namely “an upstart Crow, beautified with our feathers”. The rest of the cast includes Paula Wilcox, Helen Monks, Harry Enfield, Gemma Whelan, Rob Rouse, Dominic Coleman and Steve Spears. The storyline concentrates on Shakespeare`s frustrating family life, wherein the members of his clan are far beyond being irreverent, as none of them find his writing very impressive.

Critical reception and renewal

The critics admit that Ben Elton has not authored this brilliantly funny a script since Blackadder in the 1980s. The script is also very well-researched and portrays Shakespeare`s life very much in keeping with what is known to his biographers. Tony Hall, BBC Director General mentioned that Upstart Crow is set to “make Shakespeare irresistible to everyone”, and while this might be somewhat of an exaggeration, it will definitely bring the genius` persona closer to modern people. There is a very strong chance that the sitcom may be renewed for another series, so please stay tuned and we`ll inform you of relevant developments.
