Gloria Steinem`s first series
A feminist icon for several generations of women and an author of seven books, spirited Gloria Steinem is executive producing and hosting a documentary-style news magazine series on Viceland – her very first at the age of 82. Woman has premiered on May 10, 2016 with an eight-episode freshman season.
Steinem and a team of female journalists – Isobel Yeung, Alice Speri and others – set out to explore and report on stories related to “problems once marginalized as women`s issues”. The investigative pursuit of these topics will take the reporters to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Canada, El Salvador, Zambia, Colombia, as well as around the United States and other locations. The focus of the season is violence against women around the world, since, a Steinem affirms, the status of women in a society is a strong indicator of its general well-being.
Reviews and renewal potential
Viceland has launched in February 2016 with a small programming slate, but this spring it is expanding with a number of uniquely themed shows, such as Huang`s World culinary travelogue and skateboarding series King of the Road. Woman would not seem like a typical Viceland program at first, as the channel does have a reputation for being targeted more towards men, but apparently it`s not necessarily so. Besides being strongly female-oriented, Woman is also almost entirely female-staffed. Considering the groundbreaking subject matter, the reverential critical reception, the expertise that Gloria Steinem brings into the show, and the energy and daring that her team puts into developing and producing it, we would assume that Woman has a bright future ahead of it.
