Series information and storyline
Mum is a brand new British sitcom broadcast on BBC Two since its premiere on May 13, 2016. It is written by Stefan Golaszewski (Him&Her), directed by Richard Laxton and executive produced by Kenton Allen, Golaszewski and Matthew Justice. The first series contains six episodes.
An observational comedy centered around the subject of widowhood, Mum brings together humor, sensitivity and tragic circumstances in a beautifully skillful manner. Following her husband`s sudden death, Cathy (Lesley Manville) is forced to rebuild her life in the aftermath of this tragedy. Assisting her in this milestone transformation process is her friend Michael (Peter Mullan), her son Jason (Sam Swainsbury), his girlfriend Kelly (Lisa McGrils), her brother Derek (Ross Boatman) and his partner Pauline (Dorothy Atkinson), as well as her in-laws.
Viewership and possible renewal
Mum premiered to a solid 1.7 million viewers, and enjoys mostly positive reviews from the critics. The warm and gentle tone, the sharp writing, the incongruously ridiculous situations that Cathy finds herself in, all of these aspects somehow help the audience embrace the reality of grief, but also be reminded that life does go on, as banal as it sounds. The bittersweet series seems to be a worthwhile candidate for renewal, but no announcements have been made by BBC Two yet as to the reality of such prospects. UPDATED June 18, 2016: On June 17, 2016 BBC Two has revealed the renewal of its universally acclaimed sitcom Mum for a second series. The next chapter of Stefan Golaszewski`s sweet observational sitcom will contain the typical set of six 30-minute episodes.
