Series info and concept
Genius by Stephen Hawking is a new scientific documentary that premiered on PBS and National Geographic on May 18, 2016. It is produced by Bigger Bang and executive produced by Ben Bowie and Iain Riddick. The first season contains six one-hour parts. Stephen Hawking narrates all of the tasks that are offered to the participants and provides insight as to the historical context of the discoveries in question.
The series tackles popular scientific questions and attempts to demonstrate that ordinary people can achieve an understanding of the ways in which the greatest scientific discoveries were made. Stephen Hawking poses puzzling questions and tasks to three participants who have no advanced scientific training to help them arrive at the same conclusions as the scientists who have made the breakthrough before. The first episode discussed the possibility of time travel, and the participants actually time-traveled themselves by the end of the episode.
Ratings and renewal prospects
The series has a 7/10 IMDb rating, and a Metascore of 67 so far. The show includes an impressive visual package, including striking footage and on-screen graphics. It is not actually a competition as much as a series of demonstrations and experiments carried out, although the challenges that the “ordinary people” have to undertake remind the audience more of Survivor than of a scientific documentary. Whether or not there will be a second season of Genius with Stephen Hawking is not clear at this point, so please stay tuned and we`ll keep you informed.
