Storyline and production info

A brand new Sky1 sport-themed sitcom series Rovers has premiered on May 24, 2016. The series is written by Joe Wilkinson and David Earl, executive produced by Lucy Ansbro, Craig Cash and Jon Montague and produced by Jellylegs. The freshman series contains 6 episodes.

The sitcom introduces the audience to the fans of one of the oldest, and, arguably, the worst football club in the UK, Redbridge Rovers F.C. The loyal Rovers fan club is more of a social club, whose stadium is right next to the local garbage dump. The team attendance is 27 people on the average per match, and the team is not a part of any league at all, but it does not hinder the fans` loyalty. The warm-hearted comedy features Doreen (Sue Johnston), the matriarch of the group who`s famous for her meat raffles. Among the other key characters are Pete Mott (Craig Cash), who is obsessive about his fandom, his pal Tel (Steve Spiers), lodger Tom (Jamie Demetriou), bartender Susan, bossy retiree Francis (Judith Baker), and many other sympathetic weirdos.

Reviews and renewal potential

The working class, community-themed sitcom has an average 5.5/10 IMDb score so far. The series has premiered to 0.83 million viewers. Many critics found it disappointing compared to another Cash-led series, The Royle Family, lacking in humor and character depth, although almost everyone is ready to admit that it is charming enough. No renewal or cancelation announcements have been made yet for the series, so please stay tuned for further developments.
