About the show
Antique Roadshow is an American television program, based on an eponymous British series. The long-running show has been on the air since January 9, 1997, with the current 20th season having been released on January 4, 2016 on PBS. Antique Roadshow is created by BBC Television, produced by WGBH-TV and executive produced by Marsha Bemko.
The series host (currently Mark Wahlberg) and production crew travel across the United States to small and mid-size towns, providing local antique owners with an opportunity to get their valuables appraised by professionals. The one-hour episodes contain informal appraisals, owners introducing their items, and appraisers` valuation of them, as well as the host`s introduction, conclusion and interspersed commentary segments. There have been some notable appraisals of various items on the program with values of up to $1.5 million.
Viewer reception and renewal prospects
Antiques Roadshow has been nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award thirteen times. The show`s been immensely popular both on screen and in reality, with people waiting in line for hours on end in order to be able to get access to professional appraisers. The series is interesting not solely in the fact that it surprises the owners with unexpectedly high prices for their valuables, but also in that it provides glimpses into real historical events and family history of the item owners. The human component and the emotional responses of the amazed people add quite a bit of charm to the popular series, and there seems to be no reason why it would not be renewed for another season.
