Series’ premise and production info

A curious BBC One documentary series, Fake or Fortune? is created by journalist Fiona Bruce and art dealer and art historian Philip Mould and executive produced by Simon Shaw. The show has been on the air since 2010, with the latest fifth series debuting on July 17, 2016. It is BBC in-house production.

Bruce and Mould try to figure out the provenance of paintings utilizing expert opinions, scientific methods and old-fashioned investigative work, Just three or four one-hour episodes per series, with each of them devoted to just one painting by a great artist. The previous series portrayed works by the likes of Monet, Rembrandt, Degas and Turner. A portrait by Lucian Freud opened the current series, with a sketch attributed to Rodin and a Delaroche painting that followed. The series will conclude on August 28, 2016 with an examination of three separate paintings – supposedly authored by de Kooning, Mercier, and von Menzel.

Excellent reception and renewal potential

The series has been garnering excellent reviews and is hailed as incredibly interesting. It has an 8.7/10 IMDb rating and has attracted a considerable audience throughout its run. The current series premiered to impressive 4.5 million viewers, and grew to 4.76 for the second episode. There is an excellent chance of Fake or Fortune? being commissioned for series 6.
