Series information and concept
Struggle Street is a three-part Australian documentary reality TV series that premiered on SBS on May 6, 2015 and concluded with the remaining two episodes on May 13, 2015. KEO Films Australia is the production company behind the program, which is executive produced by Mark Radomsky and narrated by David Field.
The series gives a public voice to the members of the most socially and economically disadvantaged communities around Sydney, people who rarely get a chance to express their concerns to the general public. The moving, vivid, nuanced portrayal evokes a range of emotions and provokes thought.
Record-breaking ratings and renewal
The program was broadcast with record ratings, ranking as the top series nationally in its time slot. The first episode was seen by an audience 935,000 overnight viewers, and the two subsequent episodes – by 828,000 viewers, with over 1 million in consolidated viewership. It has received much criticism from the local governments for showcasing poverty and playing on viewers` emotions, to the point of calling the series “poverty porn”. Struggle Street raised a lot of controversy with the some of the inhabitants of the featured communities protesting the manner in which the program portrayed them. Many reviewers, however, note that the issues discussed in Struggle Street are just so unpleasant to recognize and deal with that it`s much easier for the viewers to dismiss it as manipulative.
The second season of the observational series has recently been confirmed by the network. It will see the episode count increase to six, and will once again explore social issues in the same raw and powerful manner. The filming locations have not been revealed yet, with some hints pointing to Sunshine and Frankston in Victoria.
