New series from an acclaimed film director
The Get Down is a new Netflix original that became available for streaming on Netflix on August 12, 2016. It’s an American musical drama television series that was created by Shawn Ryan (Mad Dogs, The Chicago Code), directed by acclaimed Australian director Baz Luhrmann (The Great Gatsby, Moulin Rouge!) and hails from the Sony Pictures Television production studio. The series is executive produced by Stephen Adly Guirgis, Marney Hochman, Thomas Kelly, Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin, Shawn Ryan and Paul Watters.
Storyline and cast
Baz Luhrmann calls the new TV show "saga of the 1970s New York”. The story focuses on punks from the South Bronx who have launched a musical revolution that has spread beyond the city to the rest of the world. For Luhrmann, New York of the 70s is not the best place on earth, where people are burdened by financial difficulties, gloomy and bitter. At that time, Bronx teens begin changing the musical landscape of the city. They literally take the city by storm, armed only with spray paint, loud slogans and spontaneous dancing. They are slowly moving from the slums where they grew up to the bohemian Manhattan, conquering the area around the newly erected twin towers of the World Trade Center and trendy clubs Studio 54 and CBGB. The Get Down is essentially a chronicle of how during the time of national bankruptcy a new musical culture was born: disco, hip-hop and punk. The new drama series stars Jaden Smith, Shameik Moore, Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Justice Smith, Herizen Guardiola, Skylan Brooks (Southpaw), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and more.
Debut season and renewal potential
The first six episodes of The Get Down season 1 were released internationally to Netflix members on Friday, August 12, 2016 at 12:01am PST. The second half of the first season is likely to air in 2017. The reviews are a mixed bag, leaning towards positive, although the ratings on review aggregator websites are mostly strong. One particular downfall mentioned by the critics is the fact that the show loses pace after the premiere episode.
According to the award-winning director Luhrmann himself, he has been working on this ambitious project for 10 years now. This is Baz’s first musical drama project since the release of his critically-acclaimed feature film Moulin Rouge back in 2001. He understands like no other the complexity of this genre because he has previously worked on a number of music and dance projects and plays.
The new Netflix original might be a good alternative to the HBO’s new musical drama TV show Vinyl from Martin Scorsese, as it offers a fresher, more realistic and less clichéd look at the American music scene of the 70s. If the protagonist in the HBO series had a blind eye to the emergence of hip-hop, the new show, on the contrary, embraces that trend. The soundtrack is outstanding and the show as a whole has a very realistic feel: the showrunners were advised by a number of reputable rappers who have great understanding of the era, as well as veteran music journalism Nelson George.
