Production info and plot
An American legal thriller and drama television series, The Girlfriend Experience was created, written and directed by Amy Seimetz and Lodge Kerrigan. The series is based on the eponymous Steven Soderbergh 2009 film, executive produced by Soderbergh and produced by Transactional Pictures. The first season contains 13 half-hour episodes and has premiered on April 10, 2016. The season was made available in its entirety on Starz On Demand.
The show focuses on the life of law student Christine Reade (Riley Keough), who begins working for an escort service, exploring personal boundaries and trying to balance it with her studies. She subsequently uncovers a conspiracy and scandal at the Kirkland & Allen law firm, where she works as an intern.
Reviews, ratings and chances of renewal
The series premiered to 363,000 viewers, which dropped to 268,000 viewers by the third episode. The viewer reception is mostly favorable, with critics granting it a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a 7.4/10 IMDb score and 78/100 on Metacritic. The Girlfriend Experience is praised for a multifaceted plot, an excellent breakout performance by Riley Keogh, and, basically, the overall darkly fascinating, provocative and daring series. The show is the second highest-rated series on the Starz network, trailing behind Outlander. There have been no statements regarding the future of The Girlfriend Experience, but we will monitor network announcements closely and promptly inform you of either a renewal or a cancelation.
Season 1 recap
Starz` freshman drama series The Girlfriend Experience has wrapped up the broadcast of its 13 episodes on June 19, 2016. There was no ratings miracle for the final episode, as it attracted just 0.209 million viewers. Separation, the last episode, has elicited mixed response as it lacked any sort of climax usually expected of a season finale, it was a muted exploration of Christine`s sense of power, and general state of mind. Important players from previous episodes were not seen in the final episode – neither Jack, nor David Tellis, Avery or Erin. No follow-up on preceding events was given, despite the facts that the sex tape leak, for example, seems to require some attention. The episode is basically removed from the season`s continuous narrative and gives Christine space to reflect on her life, with Riley Keogh superb performance nailing Christine`s personality perfectly. There`s been no words from Starz regarding the next season, but we`re eagerly awaiting the news.
