Showtime officially canceled Penny Dreadful season 4

This article has the most up-to-date info on the status of Penny Dreadful season 4 as we continuously monitor the news to keep you in the know. Unfortunately, Showtime has officially canceled the series. There will be no season 4.

About the show and plot summary

Penny Dreadful is a horror drama based on characters from 19th century Irish and British fiction, including Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray, Mina Harker Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Created by John Logan, the series premiered at the South by Southwest film festival on March 9, 2014 and has been running on Showtime for two seasons. The third season of the series contains 9 episodes and has premiered on May 1, 2016.

Starring Eva Green and Josh Hartnett, Penny Dreadful features brilliant writing and an amazingly talented ensemble. The series is shot on location in Dublin, and its cast of iconic horror characters has expanded in the current season with participation of guest stars like Wes Studi, Sam Barnett, Jessica Barden, Patti LuPone and Shazad Laif, who have returned as regulars for season 3.

Ratings, reviews and renewal

The show did not break any records in its first season, drawing in under 1 million viewers per episode, but got another chance in 2015. Season two didn’t fare any better with a 0.57 million season premiere and just over half a million fans turning in for the rest of the season. Scoring 8.2/10 on IMDb and 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, the show does, however, have a steady fan base. It’s probably why producers and the network decided to greenlight it for a third season. The viewership numbers this season show no sign of decline, and are perfectly on par with the previous season. While there have been no announcements regarding Penny Dreadful`s future, a renewal may well be expected, since very similar ratings led to a renewal last season. Stay tuned, and we`ll make sure you`re up to date on the fate of this stylish gothic series.
