About the series

Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris is an American live television variety show hosted and executive-produced by Neil Patrick Harris. Adapted from a well known British variety series called Saturday Night Takeaway, the one-hour show premiered on NBC on September 15, 2015.

Emmy Award winner and Tony Award recipient Neil Patrick Harris is the perfect star to lead a new variety show that is unlike any other on American television. Anything can happen on Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris, which features appearances by top celebrities, comedy skits, mini game shows, incredible live music performances, hidden camera pranks and audience giveaways.

Reviews have been mixed with some critics calling the show’s format confusing. What is apparent is that the network has certainly scaled back some its very ambitious advertising plans. The show premiered on NBC at 10 p.m. but is slated to move to its usual 8 p.m. time-slot where it will need to draw in a crowd without lead-in programming. That’s a tall order, considering that just three episodes in, and ratings have already begun to slip from 6.79 million to 5.99 million viewers. With mixed reviews from critics, it’s still to early to tell whether NBC will pick up The Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris for season 2. Fans will need to stay tuned to find out.

Updated December 17, 2015: NBC`s live variety show Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris is canceled after one season, citing the sliding ratings and the ambiguous format. The host will continue to work with NBC on other projects, as this particular format proved too expensive for the network and exhausting for Harris. Both NBC producers and Harris considered a complete format overhaul, but ultimately made a decision to start the next project, which might be scripted or unscripted, from ground zero.
