About the series
DreamWorks Dragons is a US CGi-animated action, fantasy and adventure television series, based on How to Train Your Dragon, a 2010 feature film. The series fills the timeline between the original movie and its 2014 sequel. It is created by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBois, developed and executive produced by Linda and Mike Teverbaugh and produced by DreamWorks Animation. It originally premiered on Cartoon Network in 2012, was moved to Netflix in 2015, and the current third season, titled Dragons: Race to the Edge, debuted on June 24, 2016.
The series features the continuing adventures of the young dragon trainer Hiccup and his dragon companion Toothless. Of course, the fan-favorite Dragon Riders are also a part of the storyline. There are new enemies lurking around, new dragons to be trained, new worlds to be discovered.
Reviews and renewal potential
The series is generally praised by the viewers and the critics for the dazzling visual effects, and the ease with which it picks up the movie narrative and remains as entertaining as its feature prequel. According to Nielsen data, the first season of Dragons consistently ranked as the #1 program among Boys 2-14 in its Cartoon Network period between 2012 and 2014, before being picked up by Netflix. Since Netflix does not make its viewership data public, we can only assume that the series is enjoying as much success on the streaming network. There is no news yet regarding a renewal of the popular animation series for its fourth season on Netflix. Stay tuned for further announcements.
