Summary and storyline
Best Friends Whenever is a new American teenage live action comedy about two best girl friends who are given the ability travel in time. Created by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas for the Disney Channel, season 1 debuted on June 26, 2015.
On the heels of a highly anticipated Disney Channel original movie “Teen Beach 2”, comes a teen comedy series that stars up-and-coming Disney stars. Best Friends Whenever follows Cyd (Landry Bender) and Shelby (Lauren Taylor) as best friends living together while Cyd’s parents are away on an archeological dig in Peru. The girls are given the ability to time travel after an accident in one of their neighbor’s science lab.
Following a whole lot of hype, Best Friends Whenever season 1 premiered on the Disney Channel to a healthy 3.54 million viewers. However the show began to slip in ratings, dropping down to just 1.7 million in the last episode of season. Critics have also been lukewarm in their reviews of the show, with some criticizing the writing, acting and certain inconsistencies within the plot lines. Some bloggers have even gone as far as recommending people to not watch the show. While there is a scheduled Christmas Special episode called “The Girls of Christmas Past”, currently slated to air December 6, 2015, the network has not made any announcements regarding a possible renewal of Best Friends Whenever season 2.

UPDATED June 17, 2016: The second season of the newest addition to Disney Channel`s comedy slate, sci-fi teen-oriented show Best Friends Whenever has been scheduled for a summer release. The upcoming sophomore chapter will debut on Monday, July 25, 2016. Despite the mediocre ratings and mixed reviews, Disney decided to invest in a second installment, so perhaps the creative team came up with some surprising twists and turns to keep viewer interest alive.
