Series` background and production info

An Australian action drama television series, Tomorrow When the War Began, is based on the award-winning Tomorrow book series by John Marsden. It is executive produced by Matthew Street and Kim Vecera and hails from Ambience Entertainment. The first series roughly chronicles the events covered in the first novel of the series. It contains six episodes and premiered on April 23, 2016 on ABC3 AU.

A group of teenagers finds their hometown deserted upon their return from a camping trip. It turns out that Australia has been invaded by hostile powers, and the whole town population has been imprisoned. As they attempt to avoid being captured by the enemy soldiers, they realize that they are among the very few free Australians left, and must unite and find a way to defend themselves and save the prisoners. Molly Daniels, Narek Amman, Jon Prasida, Madeleine Clunies-Ross, Madeleine Madden, Andrew Creer, Fantine Banulski and Keith Purcell portray the lead characters.

Ratings and chances of renewal

The series has garnered mostly positive review aggregator scores – 7/10 on IMDb, 64% on Rotten Tomatoes and 54% on Metacritic. The viewership numbers, however, are not looking particularly optimistic. The series opened to 120,000 viewers, and lost a half of its audience by the second episode, sliding still further down in ratings for the third. The fans of the book series have expressed their sheer disappointment with the adaptation. Some of the points of criticism are the less than compelling acting and the story that deviates from the original in a manner that makes it less intriguing. No renewal or cancelation announcements have been made yet, and while there`s still plenty of material to go on, the ratings might prevent a pickup by the network.
